The Writers Statement

"A study conducted by the Taub Center for Policy Studies, which analyzed murder rates in Israel according to population groups and in an international comparison, concluded that if the Arab community were a country, it would rank third after Colombia and Mexico in terms of crime rate."

Yes indeed, this study came up as a raw summary to our reality - a reality that is fraught with darkness, complexity, fear and death - just as it is for our protagonist in this film, Rida, who plunges alone into the abyss of his own struggles, seeking to escape both his harsh reality and his inner turmoil. Adding to his suffering, a root canal pain strikes Rida, while this pain is a metaphor for his deep struggle with his roots and identity.

Rida is not a stereotypical Hollywood kinda gangster, he is a reflection of us - spontaneous, expressive, pessimistic, and profoundly lonely. His experiences mirror the struggles of our society, revealing a broader truth about the suffering we all endure in the face of rampant crime, which is spreading like a pandemic through the Arab community in Israel.

But the key difference is that Rida chose crime as his way of life, a choice that has deeply affected us and fueled our passion to address and highlight this tragic case. We want to bring attention to those who kill - then get killed - while except for their loved ones , they’re often ignored or even dismissed by others who may even take pleasure in their downfall, without understanding the underlying reasons that drove them to crime.

In crafting this narrative, we questioned ourselves honestly, though we may never have definitive answers – but yet we asked:
Who truly holds the responsibility?

And after watching this film,
Will we look at Rida - and those like him around us - the same way that we did before?
